How to encourage your child to talk

There are a lot of ways you can encourage your child to learn different words and encourage them to talk.

The more you talk to your child or do various activities them, it will make it easier for them to memorise certain words used repeatedly and say it out loud eventually.

Listed below are various ways you can encourage your child to talk:

1- Play time

Playing is one of the easiest way to spend some quality time with your kid and encourage them to speak certain words.

Toddlers like repeating what an adult around them does or says so you have to involve them in a fun play time to get their full attention.

You can count their toys with them out loud and ask them to repeat it. You can even pass a ball back and forth with them and take turns counting how many passes you do.

2- Repetition

One of the best ways to get your child to talk is to keep repeating certain words in front of them. They will try to pronounce it as well and you can encourage them when they do so.

The more you repeat certain words the easier it is for them to remember.

You can teach them the word “brush” while they are brushing their teeth or tell them it’s “bath time” when you prepare a bath for them so they learn to recognise these words.

3- Fun sounds

As you read out different bird’s names or animal’s names, it’s a good idea to make noises associated with these birds and animals.

This will keep your baby interested and will help them memorise the different names as well.

4- Pointing and repeating

It’s a good idea to point out different things and repeat their names as many times as you can.

For example if your child wants to eat their favourite chocolate then tell the chocolate’s name out loud and wait for them to repeat it.

They might not be able to do it at first but when you keep on pointing and repeating they will eventually start to formulate words that might sound like the name of the chocolate.

5- Reading books

It’s a good idea to start reading books to them aloud from a young age which have a lot of animated characters that will pique your child’s interest.

Books that have colourful characters with plain backgrounds will help your child to remember and recognise these characters.

If there is too much going on in a book then babies might lose interest as they don’t have the capability to filter out visual distractions.

6- Puzzles

Puzzles are a fun way to not only spend time with your child but to encourage them to talk.

As you solve puzzles with them you can point out various characters in a puzzle and help them solve it.

7- Praising

Whenever your child makes certain sounds that sound like words you can praise them and encourage them to continue.

This will boost their confidence and they will understand that they can trust themselves around you.

8- Talking to your child

As you talk to your child, remember to give them some to reply back.

It might take some time for them to process what you said and they might try to formulate some words or sounds to reply back.

This will help your children to understand more about how adults converse around them.

Conclusion

Playing with your toddlers or doing various activities with them will help them immensely to improve their speech skills.

You can also come up with various ideas of your own to engage your child in a conversation so they feel an inclination to reply back.

This will take some time but patience is the key and we hope this article has helped you in finding ways to encourage your child to talk.
