Five steps to more effective parenting

As parents, you might be constantly worried about how to effectively raise your children. Raising your child the right way so they turn out to be responsible adults can be the most rewarding thing you get as a parent.

To be a good parent, you need to strive to make better decisions in your life. You don’t have to be perfect all the time but you need to set some standards for yourself so that your child looks up to you and follows in your footstep while they are growing up.

These are 5 steps to more effective parenting:

1- Self-esteem

How you treat your child can affect their self esteem in the long run.

Your tone of voice ,expressions and body language can dictate how they feel about themselves. If you act disgusted every time they make mistakes or act like they embarrass you in public then it’s going to seriously hamper their self-esteem.

When you are praising them, ensure that you are not only praising them for the outcome but also the effort they have put into accomplishing the result. In the same way, if they faced a failure, keep in mind not to belittle them with mean or derogatory words.

Always make your kids aware of the fact that you love them no matter the outcome.

2- Praising

Would you like it if your boss kept criticising you the whole day? Absolutely not!

Just like adults, kids don’t like it when their parents monitor their every move and keep criticising them or giving unsolicited opinions.

You have to let your kids to grow up at their own pace. If they make mistakes or they fail at some task, it’s not the end of the world. Let them know that it’s completely normal and they can learn from this failure so they can do better the next time. Practice makes a man perfect and your kids will definitely perform better in their tasks eventually.

Instead of watching their moves and pointing out their mistakes, praise them instead for the things that they actually do. If they help you out by cleaning the dishes or making their bed then praise them for it.

3- Limits

You need to set some ground rules early on that your child should always keep in mind.

If you don’t want them to binge watch TV all day long then ensure that they are allowed to watch it for 30 mins everyday. If you don’t want them to play video games all day then communicate this with them.

Your kids should understand your limits so that they get to enjoy their life while not breaking any house rules.

You can teach them to be more disciplined by letting them know what happens when they don’t follow the rules, either they lose their privileges of playing video games or they get to complete chores with you on a weekend.

4- Make Time

Always make sure you spend time with your children even if you have a pretty busy work life.

Wake up extra early so you can sit with them and have breakfast while you discuss about what their day is going to be like.

You can even do chores with them like you can wash the dishes and they can clean it and put it in the rack while you discuss about your lives.

Another idea is to have a bed routine where you spend time with your kids by reading books together or playing a chess game before they go to sleep. You can visit lilamigosnest to find some interesting books that you can read out to your kid every night.

Children are more likely to open up when they get to have some bonding time with you where they don’t feel like they are being interrogated so interacting with them while you are doing tasks is the best way to help them open up.

5- Role Model

Your kids learn a lot from just watching you the whole day. As babies they tend to pick up fast when you are sad, angry or happy.

This in turn affects how they grow up and communicate their own feelings.

You have to model the traits that you want your kids to learn. If you want they to be kind, then you need to do good deeds for strangers, neighbours or friends so your children can learn. Try to do things for people without expecting anything in return.

Teach your kids to treat themselves and others kindly and to always be patient and open-minded.
