kids toys shopping guide

Walk into any toy aisle, or open any online store, and you’ll find thousands of choices. The right toy for a 6-month-old is very different from the right toy for a 6-year-old, and the wrong one can end up unused in a cupboard, or worse, be unsafe.

This guide walks through what to look for at each age, with real picks from our store, their prices and the age on each listing. Every product mentioned here has its own product page, so you can check the details before you buy.

Babies (0 to 12 months): soft, light and easy to grip

At this age, babies explore by grasping, shaking and putting things in their mouths. Choose toys that are light, easy to hold and made from soft or natural materials, with no parts that can come loose.

The Crochet Rabbit Rattle is hand-crocheted from 100% cotton yarn, with a 6 cm beech wood ring for little hands to hold. A small rattle ball is sealed inside, and the toy is listed as suitable from birth. It measures 18 cm tall at ₹599. It must be hand washed, so keep it for supervised play, and check the stitching regularly.

1 to 2 years: push, pull and stack

Toddlers are discovering what their hands and legs can do. They love pushing things along the floor, stacking and knocking things down. Look for sturdy toys with smooth edges and no small detachable parts.

The Channapatna Race Car and Oil Tanker set is a pack of two handcrafted wooden vehicles, listed for 1 year and up, at ₹349. For stacking, the Rainbow Stacking Toy has 7 arch blocks in different sizes with smooth edges, and it’s listed for 18 months and up. It’s currently ₹799, down from ₹1,499. The arches double as tunnels for the cars.

2 to 3 years: first puzzles and shape games

Many 2-year-olds start to enjoy matching and fitting things together. Choose puzzles with a few chunky pieces and shape toys that give a clear result.

The Wooden Puzzle – Dino (₹1,199) is made from birch plywood and listed for ages 2 to 4. The Four-Column Shape Shooter (₹499) is also listed for ages 2 to 4 and is made from non-toxic wood.

3 to 5 years: building, counting and creating

Three-year-olds can concentrate for longer, count small groups of objects and make up their own stories. This is also the age when many “not for under 3” toys become an option, as long as your child no longer puts everything in their mouth.

The Channapatna Wooden Blocks (24 pieces, ₹635) are handmade, and you can set them up so that pushing one knocks over the rest. They can also be used for counting games. The listing says they contain small parts and are not for children under 3.

For early maths, the Number on Picture Tray (0–10) (₹567) has numbers that lift with knobs to show that many objects underneath. It measures 31 x 23 cm and comes with a storage pouch. The listing doesn’t state an age, but it suits children who are learning to count to 10.

For creative children aged 4 and up, the DIY Ceramic Magnets – Vehicles kit (₹399) includes 5 ceramic vehicles to paint, paints, a brush and instructions. The finished pieces are fridge magnets. The kit includes strong magnets and small pieces, so supervise painting and keep it away from younger siblings.

5 to 8 years: puzzles, games and logic

School-age children enjoy challenge. They can follow rules, take turns and stick with a puzzle or game that takes some thinking.

The Iconic London puzzle is a 76-piece wooden jigsaw of London landmarks, listed for ages 5 and up. It measures about 11.8 x 9.85 inches and costs ₹2,999.

It covers addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and is listed from 6 years. The Countries Sudoku Combo (₹679) has three puzzle books covering currencies, flags and national animals, with answer keys, and is suited to ages 7 and up. It’s a screen-free option for travel.

How to read a toy listing before you buy online

  1. Check the age label, then the fine print. Look for small-parts warnings, such as “not for children under 3”.
  2. Look at the size. Photos can mislead, so compare the listed dimensions to something you own.
  3. Check the material and finish. Look for non-toxic, water-based paints, and read the care instructions.
  4. Think about what your child will do with it. Open-ended toys like blocks last longer than toys with one function.
  5. Look for the ISI mark. Toys sold in India fall under BIS safety rules, so check the listing or packaging for the mark where it applies.
  6. Ask if the listing is unclear. If an age or material is missing, message our team on WhatsApp before you order.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a toy for my child’s age?

Start with the age label, then think about what your child can do now. A toy that is slightly challenging holds attention longer than one that is too easy or too hard.

Are age labels on toys a safety guarantee?

No. An age label is a guide, not a promise that a toy is safe for every child of that age. Check for small parts, supervise play and look at your child’s own habits, such as whether they still mouth toys.

What are good gifts for kids under ₹500?

A vehicle set, a DIY craft kit or a shape game are all good options, and several are available in our store under ₹500. Pick based on your child’s age and interests.

How many toys does a child need?

Fewer than you might think. A small number of open-ended toys, rotated every couple of weeks, often keeps a child more engaged than a full toy box.

Are wooden toys better than plastic or electronic toys?

Each has its place. Wooden toys tend to suit hands-on, open-ended play, while electronic toys offer interactive features. The best choice depends on the child’s age and the kind of play you want to encourage.

Where can I buy kids’ toys online in India?

You can browse our full range on the toys and games page. Read each product page for the age label, material and size before you order.
